Fathers Day Letter
Cards are great. But there is something about a letter that hits differently. A card gets read, smiled at, and propped up on the mantle. A letter gets folded up and kept in a drawer for years. My husband still has one the kids made him a couple of Father’s Days ago, and I have caught him reading it more than once.
The thing is, writing a letter feels intimidating until you actually start. You do not need to be a great writer. You do not need perfect words or poetic sentences. You just need to think about one or two real things you want him to know, and write them down like you are talking to him.
That is what this guide is for. Whether you are helping your kids put something together, writing to your own dad, or want to give your husband something more meaningful than a card this year, you will find everything you need right here.
Why Write a Father’s Day Letter?
Writing a letter to your dad on Fathers Day is a wonderful way to show him how much you care. It’s more personal than a store-bought card and lets you express exactly what’s in your heart.
In your letter, you can share memories, say thanks for all he does, and tell him why he’s so special to you. It’s a unique gift that he can keep and look back on forever, reminding him of your love every time he reads it. It’s a chance to say all those lovely things you feel but don’t always get to say.
How to Create the Perfect Father’s Day Letter
Getting Started
- Find the Perfect Spot: Grab your favorite pen and some nice paper, or design something on the computer. Find a quiet spot where you can think and feel all the good stuff about your dad.
- Open With Love: Start your fathers day letter with something sweet like “Dear Dad” or “To the Best Dad Ever”. This sets the tone for your heartfelt message.
What to Include in Your Letter

- Thanks for the Memories: Think about your favorite times together. Maybe it was a fishing trip, or those evenings he taught you to ride a bike. Mention these memories to remind him of the joyful times you’ve shared.
- Celebrate His Qualities: What do you love about him? Is he funny, wise, or kind? Tell him! For example, you could write, “I love how you always make us laugh,” or “Your advice has always guided me.”
- The Little Things Count: Sometimes it’s the small moments that mean the most. Did he teach you how to tie your shoes or help you with homework? Let him know how those little things have made a big difference.
- Look Forward: Share your excitement for future plans or adventures you want to have with him. It could be as simple as watching a movie together or planning a holiday.
- End With a Flourish: Finish your letter by telling him how much you love him. A simple “I love you” or “You’re the best dad ever!” can be the perfect close.
Example of Fathers Day Letter
Father’s Day Letter from a Child
Dear Dad,
I wanted to write you a letter this year instead of just a card because I had too much to say to fit in a small space.
My favorite thing about you is the way you always show up. You come to every single game even when you have had a long week at work. You sit in the cold and you cheer the loudest and you never make me feel like it is an inconvenience. I notice that, even when I do not say it.
I also love that you are funny. Like actually funny, not just dad joke funny. Although the dad jokes are pretty good too. Do not tell anyone I said that.
I do not always say thank you for the stuff you do every day. The rides to practice, the help with homework, the way you fix things without being asked. So I am saying it now. Thank you. For all of it.
You are my favorite dad. Happy Father’s Day.
Love, [name]
Note for parents: Read this out loud with your child and ask them to swap in their own details. What does Dad always show up for? What is something funny he does? What is one thing they want to thank him for? Even just changing two or three lines makes it completely theirs.
Father’s Day Letter from an Adult Child to Their Dad
Writing to your own Dad as an adult is a different experience than helping your kids do it. You have years of history to draw from, things you maybe never said out loud, and a perspective on who he is that only comes with time. This template is a starting point. Fill in the details that are true for you and it will say exactly what you mean.
Dear Dad,
I know I do not always say this enough, but I have been thinking about [something specific, for example: the way you handled things when we were growing up / how hard you worked for our family / the advice you gave me that I did not appreciate until later].
One of my favorite memories of you is [specific memory]. I think about that more than you probably realize.
Something I have always admired about you is [quality, for example: your patience / your work ethic / the way you never complained / how you always made us feel like everything was going to be okay]. I hope I have carried some of that with me.
There are things I have wanted to say for a while and Father’s Day feels like a good excuse to actually say them. [Write one honest, specific thing here. It does not need to be long.]
Thank you for everything, Dad. More than I probably show.
Love, [your name]
Tip: The best thing you can do with this template is replace the brackets with something real and specific. The more specific it is, the more it will mean to him. “Your patience” is nice. “The way you stayed calm the night I crashed the car” is something he will never forget reading.
Father’s Day Letter from Wife to Husband
If you want to give your husband something more meaningful than a card this year, a letter is the answer. It does not need to be long. Even half a page of honest, specific words will mean more to him than anything you could buy. Here is a template to get you started.
Dear [his name],
Father’s Day feels like the right time to tell you some things I think about all the time but do not always say.
Watching you be a Dad to [kids’ names / our kids] is one of my favorite things. The way you [something specific he does, for example: get on the floor and play with them / stay patient at bedtime when I have already run out / remember every little thing they care about] tells me everything about who you are.
I noticed [specific moment from the past year, for example: the way you handled the night they were sick / the effort you put into their birthday / the way you showed up even when you were exhausted]. I did not say anything at the time but I saw it and it meant a lot.
Our kids are lucky to have you. I am lucky to have you. Not just as a parent but as the person I get to do all of this with.
[Add one honest line here about something you love about him or something you are grateful for that you do not say often enough.]
Happy Father’s Day. We love you more than you know.
[Your name]
Tip: The bracket sections are where the letter becomes yours. Swap in real details from your actual life together and it stops being a template and starts being something he will keep. If you are stuck, think about one specific moment from the past twelve months where you watched him be a great dad and start there.
Tips to Make It Shine
- Add a Personal Touch: Include a drawing, a photo of a special moment, or even a little DIY gift.
- Keep It Genuine: Write from the heart. Your dad will appreciate the honesty more than anything perfectly written.
- Decorate the Letter: Use colorful pens, stickers, or anything that adds a fun twist to your letter.
