July Party Themes

Sharing is caring!

One of my favorite things I stumbled onto as a party-planning parent is that July is absolutely packed with National days. There is a National day for ice cream, for hot dogs, for chocolate, for gummy worms, for piña coladas, for sprinkles. Basically someone sat down and turned the entire month into an excuse to celebrate something delicious, and I respect it completely.

Once I started looking at July through that lens, party planning got so much easier. Instead of trying to come up with a theme from scratch, the month basically hands you one every few days. You just have to know which ones are worth building a party around.

That is exactly what this list is. A guide to the best July national days and how to turn each one into a genuinely fun celebration, whether you are planning a big backyard bash, a low-key family night, or something for the kids that does not require three weeks of preparation. Pick the date that works for you and start there.

July Party Themes

Candy Party

(National Gummy Worm Day, July 15 and National Lollipop Day, July 20)

There are so many fun candy days in July that are great party themes, so why not satisfy your sweet tooth with a Candy Party? Decorate your space with vibrant colors and set up candy stations featuring gummy worms, lollipops, and all kinds of sugary treats. Play candy party games like a candy scavenger hunt or candy relay to keep the energy going.

Specific tip: Set up a “guess the candy” jar game where guests estimate how many candies are inside. Winner takes the jar home. It costs almost nothing to set up and kids absolutely love it.

Pizza Party

(National Junk Food Day, July 21)

Celebrate National Junk Food Day the right way with a Pizza Party. Set up a DIY pizza station with a variety of bases, sauces, and toppings so every guest can build their own. The more toppings the better, weird combinations are half the fun.

Specific tip: Set a timer and make it a competition. Who can build the best pizza in 60 seconds? Have a panel of judges (the kids) score each one on creativity and presentation. It turns dinner into an activity and everyone ends up with something delicious.

Tropical Luau

(National Piña Colada Day, July 10)

Transport your guests to a tropical paradise with a Luau themed party. Embrace the island vibes with Hawaiian decorations, leis, and of course piña coladas for the adults and a frozen pineapple lemonade version for the kids. Put on grass skirts, have a limbo competition, and dance to some lively tropical tunes.

Specific tip: Make a DIY piña colada bar with a non-alcoholic base so kids and adults can both participate. Set out coconut cups, little paper umbrellas, and pineapple chunks as garnishes. It looks impressive and takes about ten minutes to set up.

Red, White, and Blue Party

(Independence Day, July 4)

Extend the Fourth of July celebration throughout the month with a Red, White, and Blue Party. Deck out your space with patriotic decorations, serve classic American food, and keep the sparklers ready for after dark. Encourage guests to dress in their most patriotic outfits and check out our full guide to fun ways to celebrate the 4th of July for even more ideas.

Specific tip: Set up a red, white, and blue dessert bar with strawberries, whipped cream, and blueberries that guests can layer into cups or onto skewers. It looks stunning, costs very little, and takes zero baking skills.

Ice Cream Party

(National Ice Cream Day, third Sunday of July and National Vanilla Ice Cream Day, July 23)

July just got cooler with an Ice Cream Party. Set up an ice cream bar with various flavors, toppings, and cones so guests can build their dream sundae. Be sure to include vanilla for National Vanilla Ice Cream Day and strawberry toppings for a classic sundae option. Throw in some ice cream jokes for extra laughs.

Specific tip: Add a “secret sundae” challenge where you assign each guest a random combination of three toppings and they have to use all of them. The combinations get ridiculous fast and it is genuinely one of the funniest party games that requires zero supplies.

Backyard Movie Night

(National Hot Dog Day, July 19)

Celebrate National Hot Dog Day with an outdoor Movie Night. Set up a backyard screening with comfy blankets, pillows, and string lights overhead. Serve hot dogs with a topping bar so everyone can build their own, and enjoy a movie under the stars.

Specific tip: Let the kids vote on the movie in advance by writing their choice on a slip of paper and drawing one out of a hat. It builds excitement before the night and means nobody spends twenty minutes arguing over what to watch while the food gets cold.

Emoji Party

(National Emoji Day, July 17)

Get ready to express yourself with an Emoji Party. Decorate with colorful emojis, ask guests to come dressed as their favorite one, and set up a DIY photo booth with emoji props. Challenge your friends to communicate using only emojis in a game of charades or emoji Pictionary.

Specific tip: Print out 20 common emoji images and tape them around the room before guests arrive. Give everyone a sheet and challenge them to find and identify all 20 during the party. First one to finish wins. It keeps guests moving and mixing from the moment they walk in.

Karaoke Party

(any July weekend)

Hit the high notes with a Karaoke Party. Set up a stage area with colorful streamers and disco lights, put together a playlist of crowd favorites, and encourage guests to dress as their favorite musician. Whether someone is a karaoke pro or strictly a shower singer, this one always ends in laughter.

Specific tip: Create a “duet jar” with slips of paper pairing up guests randomly. Each pair has to perform one song together whether they like it or not. The combinations are always unexpected and it gets the shyer guests involved without putting them on the spot alone.

Sprinkle Party

(National Sprinkle Day, July 23)

Add a dash of color to your celebration with a Sprinkle Party themed around National Sprinkle Day. Set up a sprinkle-inspired dessert table with cupcakes, cookies, and ice cream topped with every color of sprinkle you can find. Host a sprinkle art station where guests can decorate their own cookies or cupcakes to take home.

Specific tip: Buy plain sugar cookies and set out small bowls of icing in different colors alongside every variety of sprinkle you can find. Decorating their own cookie is the activity and the party favor rolled into one. Kids love it and cleanup is surprisingly manageable

Senior Party

(World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, last Sunday of July)

Celebrate World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly with a party that truly honors the seniors in your life. Plan fun senior party games like bingo, trivia tailored for seniors, and a dance floor playing timeless favorites they actually know and love.

Specific tip: Create a “memory wall” by asking family members to bring one printed photo of a shared memory with the guest of honor. Pin them all up on a board at the party and spend time going through them together. It costs almost nothing and becomes the emotional centerpiece of the whole event.

Seniors party

Family Reunion

(National Aunt and Uncle Day, July 26)

Turn National Aunt and Uncle Day into a fun family reunion. Arrange a gathering that brings together relatives near and far, set up a welcoming space with family photos displayed around the room, and plan some activities like a talent show, a group trivia game about family history, or a classic backyard relay race.

Specific tip: Print out a simple “family bingo” card before the event with squares like “has traveled to another country,” “can speak more than one language,” or “has the same birthday month as you.” Guests mingle and find people who match each square. It is the best icebreaker for family events where the cousins do not quite know each other yet.

Tea Party

(Alice in Wonderland Day, July 4)

Take a trip down the rabbit hole with an Alice in Wonderland inspired Tea Party. Transform your space with mismatched teacups, tiered cake stands, and whimsical decorations. Ask guests to dress as characters from the story and set up a photo booth with props for extra fun.

Specific tip: Label all the food and drinks with Alice in Wonderland style tags like “Eat Me” and “Drink Me” for an instant themed touch that takes about five minutes to put together. Print them from any free template online and tie them on with twine. Guests always love it.

Tea party

Chocolate Party

(World Chocolate Day, July 7 and National Milk Chocolate Day, July 28)

Indulge your sweet tooth with a Chocolate Party dedicated entirely to the world’s favorite treat. Set up a chocolate fountain, arrange an assortment of dipping options, and decorate with rich chocolate tones. Host a chocolate tasting with different percentages and types, and run a blindfolded chocolate taste test to see who really knows their chocolate.

Specific tip: Set up a “chocolate making station” using melting chocolate wafers, molds, and toppings like crushed pretzels, sea salt, and freeze-dried fruit. Guests make their own chocolate bark or molded chocolates to take home as a party favor. It is surprisingly easy to set up and people absolutely love having something they made themselves to bring home.

Pool Party

(National Swimming Pool Day, last Sunday of July)

Dive into summer with the ultimate Pool Party. Decorate with vibrant inflatables, beach balls, and tropical decor. Set up a refreshing drink station poolside and organize water games like a cannonball contest, water volleyball, and a floating relay race.

Specific tip: Set up a “pool Olympics” with four or five timed challenges like fastest width swim, best cannonball scored by judges, or longest time floating without touching the sides. Give out dollar store medals at the end. Kids go absolutely wild for any activity that involves a podium moment.

Pool Party

Gaming Party
