Fathers Day Poems

Sharing is caring!

Father’s Day cards are one of those things that sneak up on you every single year. One minute it’s May, the next you’re standing in the kitchen at 8pm the night before, wondering how to help your kids say something that actually means something.

We’ve done the construction paper card with the glittery handprints, the folded paper with the wobbly handwriting, and the “I’ll just write it myself and sign their names” emergency backup. All of them. And honestly? The ones that make the biggest impact were always the ones with a few simple, heartfelt words inside.

That’s why I put these poems together, original verses you can actually use, short enough for little ones to copy out themselves, and a few deeper ones for when you want to make Dad (or Grandad) properly well up. Pick the one that feels right, hand your kid a pencil, and you’re done.

Short and Sweet Poems for Dad

These are perfect for younger kids, simple enough to copy into a card without too many words, but meaningful enough to make Dad smile. If your little one is still working on their handwriting, these are the ones to go for.

1. My Super Dad
You don’t wear a cape,
Or fly in the sky,
But you’re my hero,
And that’s no lie!
You fix what’s broken,
And give the best hugs,
You’re full of advice,
And squash all the bugs!

2. Daddy, I Love You
You tickle my toes and tuck me in tight,
You read me stories every night.
You teach me to laugh, to learn, and to grow,
Daddy, I love you more than you know.

3. World’s Best Joke-Teller
Your jokes are corny,
Your dance moves too,
But no one makes me laugh
Quite like you!

You’re silly and sweet,
And strong like a bear,
You’re the best dad ever,
Beyond compare!

Poems Kids Can Write in Cards

These ones are written from the child’s point of view, which makes them feel extra personal coming from your kids. Read them out to younger children and let them pick their favorite, even just choosing feels like it’s theirs. Older kids can copy these straight in without any help.

4. You Are My Sunshine, Dad
You are my sunshine on a cloudy day,
You cheer me up in every way.
From morning pancakes to bedtime tuck,
I love you more than a Tonka truck!

5. A Poem from Your Little Shadow
I follow your footsteps wherever they go,
You teach me so much and help me grow.
You’re patient and kind, and oh-so-smart
Daddy, I love you with all my heart.

6. A Big Hug in Words
If I could wrap these words around you tight,
You’d feel my hug from morning to night.
Thank you, Dad, for all you do
My heart is full because of you.

Funny Poems Just for Laughs

If your dad is the type who’d rather have a laugh than a cry on Father’s Day, these are for him. They work brilliantly in cards but also as a text, a voice note, or read out loud at the dinner table, bonus points if the kids do the reading.

7. King of the Remote
Dad, you’re the king of the TV remote,
And the captain of the fishing boat.
You grill the burgers just right, no lie
But your dad jokes make me roll my eyes!

8. The Dad Nap
You nap with your mouth open wide,
With one sock on, lying on your side.
But when you’re awake, you’re pretty rad
Happy Father’s Day, you sleepy dad!

9. Dad’s Toolbox
Hammer and nails, a measuring tape,
You fix things fast without escape.
But when it comes to socks on the floor
You pretend you don’t see them anymore!

Sentimental Poems for Older Kids or Adults

These ones are for when you want to say something that really has meaning. They’re written for older kids or adults sending a card to their own dad – the kind of poems that are short enough to sit in a card but might just get a little quiet moment of reflection out of him. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

10. Thank You, Dad
Thank you for being my biggest fan,
For guiding me gently, hand in hand.
For the wisdom you shared, the love you gave
You’re the bravest man, strong and brave.

11. Forever My Father
You held me close when I was small,
And caught me when I took a fall.
You taught me lessons, big and true
And I’m the person I am because of you.

12. The Heart of Our Home
You’re the calm in the chaos, the laugh in our days,
The steady voice when we’ve lost our way.
You’re the heart of our home, through and through
And Dad, we’re all better because of you.

Poems for Grandad

Grandads deserve their own moment on Father’s Day too. Whether your kids are writing to their Grandad directly, or you want to include him in the celebration, these poems are warm, simple, and easy to personalise. Just swap in his name or a favourite memory and it becomes something really special.

13. The Best Grandad You’ve got the softest hugs around, The warmest laugh, the kindest sound. You spoil us rotten, that’s no lie, You’re the best Grandad, and that’s why On Father’s Day we want to say, We’re glad you’re ours in every way.

14. Grandad’s Hands Grandad’s hands have built and made, Have helped and held and never swayed. They’ve fixed our toys and wiped our tears, And guided us through all our years. These hands have given us so much, We love you, Grandad, so so much.

15. Just Like Magic When things go wrong and days feel long, A visit to your place makes me feel strong. Something about the way you are Makes everything feel less bizarre. You help us and make things right, Grandad, you’re our favorite light.

Fun Ideas to Use These Poems

Don’t let these just sit on a screen, here are some of our favourite ways to actually use them. Some of these have become little traditions in our house, and a couple of them are genuinely easier than they look.

  • Print and frame it. Choose a sentimental poem, print it in a simple font, and pop it in a cheap frame from the dollar store. Add the child’s name and the year at the bottom. It becomes a keepsake rather than something that gets left on the kitchen bench.
  • Let kids copy it by hand. There is something about a child’s handwriting, the wobbly letters, the uneven lines, that makes a poem ten times more meaningful than a typed version. Give them a nice piece of paper and let them go for it.
  • Record a video or voice note. Have the kids read one out loud and send it as a voice message or film it on your phone. Grandads especially love these, it’s something they can play back whenever they want.
  • Stick it somewhere unexpected. Tuck a poem in his lunchbox, tape it to the bathroom mirror, or slip it under his coffee cup in the morning. Finding it by surprise makes it feel even more special.
  • Use it at the dinner table. If you’re celebrating with a family meal or BBQ, have the kids read a poem out before you eat. Even the eye-rolling teenagers usually come around once the laughing starts.
  • Turn it into a craft. Write the poem in the middle of a page and have the kids decorate the border with drawings of their favorite things about Dad. Crayon, glitter, stickers, the messier the better.

Father’s Day is all about celebrating the guy who’s always been there, with his dad jokes, mystery tools, and unconditional love. Whether your kids are tiny scribblers or cool teens, a little poem goes a long way in making Dad feel extra special.

So go ahead, print one out, glue it to some construction paper, add a few glittery stars, and boom! Instant heart-melter.
